What is Orthodontics Surgical Treatment?

When orthodontics treatment alone is not sufficient to correct a problem, Surgical Treatment may be required.
Normally, braces treatment will have already begun prior to surgery and will be continued during recovery and until healing is totally complete.

An oral surgeon must perform the surgery, but our expert orthodontists will be with you throughout the treatment and will work closely with your surgeon to ensure a successful result.

When is Surgery Required?

Prior to a final decision for surgery, orthodontic x-rays and diagnostic imaging will be completed.

Listed below are some examples of situations requiring orthodontic surgical treatment:

     1. Irregularities in jaw bone
     2. Serious overjet (front teeth protrude over bottom teeth)
     3. Severe misalignments
     4. Serious protruding or receding upper jaw

It is recommended that bone growth be complete prior to surgery. Males should be between 17 and 21 and females between 14 and 16.

The Surgical Procedure and Its Aftermath

The surgical treatment must be performed by an oral surgeon, typically in a hospital setting, under general anesthesia and usually takes several hours to complete.

The procedure involves removing, shifting or altering bone so that proper movement of the jaw and teeth is restored. Braces are left on to assist with teeth and jaw bone stability.  Tiny wires, screws or rubber bands are then used to secure bones in the corrected position, which will integrate with the bone structure.

Full healing and recovery will take about six weeks. Following the healing process our experts here in Woodbury will resume orthodontic care to maintain the success of the surgical treatment. This most often requires a few tweaks and minor adjustments. Full orthodontic and surgical treatment will generally take from one to three years.

This combination of surgical and orthodontic treatment will positively impact your life in many ways. Your teeth and jaw will function as they should, overall health will improve and the lovely symmetry of your face will be amazing to see.
